Did you know that the library can now pedal its way to your community? 

With 100s of libraries being closed over the last decade and remaining library services, staff and premises under increasing financial pressures those with responsibility for running these community hubs have had to think of innovative ways to ensure people still have access to the fundamental opportunity of accessing books and information. Bristol City Council's Library services have found a creative, financially and environmentally sustainable way to expand the reach of their services with their Words on Wheels project.

Cargo bikes are an increasingly familiar sight in Bristol as businesses seek environmentally-friendly ways of distributing their goods. The city’s libraries are one of the latest organisations to turn to peddle power as a means of reaching people who might not usually use their facilities. They are taking books and more out into communities with three specially commissioned, colourful cargo bikes that act as mini, mobile pop-up libraries. 

The bikes are loaded-up with whatever is needed for their mission, be it internet-enabled laptops for a pop-up job fair, or big books and blankets for story-time in the park, they can also sign-up new library members, lend books and much more!  

The Words on Wheels team are supported by professional storytellers, circus performers and writers and this summer they will be touring around attending events and festivals in the city.
