#BristolWeAreHere survey for young BAME creatives

Rising Arts Agency has launched a new survey aimed at creative young people aged 16-25 from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds (BAME).

16% of Bristol residents are BAME, yet BAME creatives are underrepresented in the city, and there is no data on BAME cultural participation. Rising Arts Agency, a local social enterprise led by artists, aims to change that through mentoring, training, commissioning opportunities and the chance to showcase work.

The social enterprise’s current campaign, #WhoseCulture, includes the survey in its two-year programme of consultations, labs, workshops and data analysis, to boost inclusion. #WhoseCulture is particularly focused on deprived communities in Barton Hill, St. Paul’s, Southmead and Withywood, but the BAME survey – which forms part of the campaign – is open to every young person of colour in the city.

The survey will reveal the many arts activities young BAME people are involved in, such as animation, art, dance, film, music, photography, poetry and spoken word, and theatre. You can describe your own projects and the cultural places or events you enjoy in Bristol.

Benefits to taking part include:                                                                        

  • Spreading the word about your creative work - if you post about it online, via a website, blog or social media channel, you can add a link to it in the survey.
  • Describing your current projects, which Rising Arts Agency might be able to help with.
  • Sharing your views on what Rising Arts Agency should be called. Options include People of Colour, and BAME Creatives.
  • Sending a message to Bristol’s young creatives of colour.
