Tackling board diversity
The new Charity Governance Code published in July 2017 has brought into sharp focus the need to improve the diversity of trustee boards. It recommends that trustee boards periodically take part in training and/or reflection about diversity and understands their responsibilities in this area.
The code states that ‘diversity, in the widest sense is essential for boards to stay informed and responsive and to navigate the fast-paced and complex changes facing the voluntary sector. Boards whose trustees have different backgrounds and experience are more likely to encourage debate and to make better decisions’.
Achieving diversity is a challenge. Parts of the population not traditionally represented on trustee boards include young people, disabled people and members of minority or ethnic communities. For example, the Charity Commission estimates that only 0.5% of the trustee population is made up of 18-24 year olds. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that most trustee vacancies are not advertised.
This evening interactive training course will enable you to be proactive about improving the diversity of your trustee board and will include best practice from the new Charity Governance Code. By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Analyse and advocate the case for improving diversity in your organisation
- Describe best practice in trustee recruitment and induction
- Develop a plan for change in your organisation
This course will include case studies and practical examples of how charities are addressing diversity on their boards. It will be run by Voscur’s Trainer and our Head of Inclusion.
